Most New Yorkers can't name more than a four birds in their own backyard, yet NYC is in the middle of one of the greatest migratory pathways on earth. Lets change that 💫.
Join Wild Captives founder Kendall Tichner - author of Gateway to City Birds - for a guided urban birding walk through the historic grounds of Green-Wood Cemetery: 478 acres of rolling hills, old-growth trees, Gothic architecture, and one of the best birding spots in the city.
This session isn't just about spotting birds. You'll learn how to actually identify what you're seeing and hearing - movement in the canopy, silhouettes overhead, birdsong, behavior, migration patterns, and the small details that make you hooked on this lifetime hobby. We'll search for warblers, hawks, herons, and the famous Monk Parakeets nesting in Green-Wood's cathedral-like entrance spires.
Your ticket includes:
A guided birding walk through Green-Wood Cemetery
The fundamentals + spirituality of birding: how to look, listen, and identify birds in the city
Binoculars to borrow, but feel free to bring if you have your own!
Coffee + light bites before the walk
A Wild Captives birding life list card to start track every species you spot
A copy of Gateway to City Birds: An Introductory Field Guide for Identifying Our Most Common Feathered Neighbors by Kendall Tichner
An official Wild Captives Urban Birding merit badge
Kids and beginners welcome. Just bring comfortable shoes, curiosity, a water bottle, and a willingness to look up. 🌿
Sadly the park does not allow dogs.
A portion of every ticket supports the Wild Bird Fund: NYC's only wildlife rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned wild birds.
